In the face of anti-immigrant sentiment, Boas himself took on anthropometric studies of recent arrivals to the country and their children in order to discount racialist theories (Boas 1912). Combating the rise of anti-Semitism, Boas and his students pressured American anthropology to denounce officially typological racial theories as unscientific (Barkan 1992). Melville Herskovits (1895–1963) conducted fieldwork in East Africa and Haiti before founding the anthropology department at Northwestern and, arguably, founding African and African American Studies as an academic field (Gershenhorn 2004; Herskovits 1926, 1941).

Harvard’s Peabody Museum, for example, was founded in 1866 through the patronage of banker George Peabody. It became a prominent research center under the direction of Frederick Ward Putnam (1839– 1915), who expanded its collections and began publishing the Papers of the Peabody Museum. Following his success in Massachusetts, Putnam went on to establish a number of anthropology museums and departments (Browman 2002).
